LEADING LADIES,2340 BIG BAND CONCERT
Tamworth's Capitol Theatre was packed to the rafters for last Saturday nights LEADING LADIES-2340 BIG BAND CONCERT. This special concert was promoted by Tamworth's Zonta Club with all proceeds going to Tamworth's Women’s Refuge. This 5 star concert professionally compered by Anna Moulder, the long time chief of staff of the ABC Radio North West and New England featured the cream of local talent and visiting artists including Kate Armstrong, Gabriela McDonald, Aleyce Simmonds, Annand Abby Walsh, Kristie Rabbitt, Catherine Hutchinson, Natacha Curnow, Lara Northey, Holly Schultz, Rae Moody and a most impressive large 2340 Big Band Women's Choir who gave that special touch to all the performers.
All the singers featured well known songs made famous world wide by Ella Fitzgerald, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Nina Simone, Julie Andrews and Olivia Newton-John and Helen Reddy etc. The Capitol Theatre had recently updated its sound system and made the 18 piece 2340 Big Band conducted by gifted pianist Tim Godden blend perfectly with all the performers. Tim's mother Val who leads the reed section on Alto Saxophone, is so proud of the standard the band has achieved under Tim's guidance. Special mention must be made of lead trumpeter 83 year old Ron Hartmann who is truly an inspiration to all band members and his many friends. Ron, along with his son Graham on 2nd trumpet were featured with my Johnny Muller Glenn Miller Style Big band between 1977 and 1985.It was only fitting that after the Finale when all performers were on stage the capacity crowd gave them a standing ovation complete with loud cheering.
My best mate Sinatra devoted crooner and passionate Longyard golfer, Peter Harkins, commented that this overall concert was of such a high standard that it would be very popular with audiences in Sydney and other major cities throughout Australia. In another featured moment 6 totally dedicated workers for the community in the Tamworth and New England received Zonta Club Awards for their support from councillors Juanita Wilson and Mark Rodda, Stephanie Cameron from Zonta, Emily Roy Joblink Plus, Deb Maes of Zonta and 2340 Big Bands conductor Tim Godden. Nice to see West Tamworth's Leagues Club long time boss Rod Laing who was a great supporter of my 11 years of Billabong Jazz concerts receiving one of these special awards. Going on the huge success of Saturdays LEADING LADIES SHOW future 2340 Big Band Concerts will sell out quickly.
